The effects of hydrostatic pressure (0--85 kbar) on the Raman-active phonon modes of bulk superconducting YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 4]O[sub 8] are investigated. This has enabled us to accurately determine and compare the mode Grueneisen parameters for six different phonon modes, including those associated with various vibrations either in the Cu-O planes or in the Cu-O chains. A marked difference can be observed between the behavior of these chain and plane modes. The mode Grueneisen parameters of the phonons present in both the YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 4]O[sub 8] and the more conventional superconductor YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 4]O[sub 8] are anomalously different.
