Total cross sections for the reaction [bar p]p [yields] pp[pi][sup [circ]] have been measured for polarized proton incident energies ranging from the single pion production threshold to 1 GeV. This was accomplished by use of a new neutral meson spectrometer called SPESO-2[pi]. This spectrometer detector the two [gamma]-rays of the decay of the [pi][sup [circ]] in coincidence. The experiment was performed at the synchrotron of the Laboratoire National Saturne in Saclay, France. The results show that the total cross section is highly dependent on the detection efficiency of the spectrometer. This work also describes a calibration experiment that was performed with a setup of the SPESO-2[pi] spectrometer. This calibration experiment took place at the tagged photon beam of the PHOENICS experiment at the ELSA accelerator facilities in Bonn, Germany. The results of this experiments is compared with the results from an Electron Gamma Shower EGS simulation code. The simulation and the experiment are in good qualitative agreement. Finally, an appendix has been written describing in detail the Limited Streamer Tube (LST) subsystem of the spectrometer. This gas detector system is used to locate where the shower was initiated. The complete subsystem of the LST is not described anywhere else.
