A method is described for the determination of the lead content of gasoline from 0.001 to 0.1 g Pb/gal in gasoline samples with olefin contents as high as 27%. Any lead compound present in the sample is extracted into an aqueous phase by shaking the sample with aqueous iodine trichloride solution. Organo-lead compounds are then converted to the inorganic form by boiling the solution, and the excess reagent is destroyed with sodium sulfite. The lead is finally extracted as the dithizonate and determined spectrophotometrically.
