Standard test method for lead in gasoline: iodine monochloride method

A method is described for the determination of total Pb in gasolines containing lead acyls at concentrations between 0.12 and 6.0g Pb/Imperial gal, 0.1 and 5.0g Pb/US gal and 0.026 and 1.3g Pb/l. A known volume of the gasoline is diluted with heavy distillate (a straight-run lead-free, petroleum distillate of low bromine number with approx. 10% distilling at 400/sup 0/F (205/sup 0/C) and 90% at 460/sup 0/F (240/sup 0/C) and shaken with an aqueous iodine monochloride reagent to cause any tetraalkyl lead compounds present to react with the iodine monochloride and to be extracted into the aqueous phase as the diakyl lead compounds. The dialkyl lead compounds are converted into inorganic lead compounds, dissolved in distilled H/sub 2/O, and buffered to pH 5 using sodium acetate. The Pb content of the buffered solution is then determined by titration with EDTA using xylenol orange as an indicator. (BLM)
