Gas takes the heat off

In the U.S. electricity use normally peaks during the summer months when residential, commercial, and industrial customers run their air-conditioning units. While many electric companies are working to shift electric demand from on-peak to off-peak hours, combination gas/electric utilities have an additional option: encouraging peak users of electricity to switch to gas. In this article, the author focusses on the promotion of gas cooling by combination utilities. She discusses the utilization of gas-fired dehumidification combined with electric air-conditioning, gas engine driven pumps for irrigation, and natural gas water heaters.
