Basalt Waste Isolation Project site issues and plans for their resolution

The Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP) has completed preparation and submittal to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of the project's Site Characterization Report (SCR). This document, in addition to containing a comprehensive review of the status of site selection and characterization activities at the Hanford Site, contains a detailed analysis of the status of work aimed at meeting proposed regulatory criteria for a nuclear waste repository in basalt (NWRB). This paper reviews the major work required (work elements), issues identified, and plans for work completion and issue resolution identified in the BWIP SCR.
