The Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP) has completed preparation and submittal to the US NRC of the project's Site Characterization Report (SCR). This document, in addition to containing a comprehensive review of the status of site selection and characterization activities at Hanford, contains a detailed analysis of the status of work aimed at meeting proposed regulatory criteria for a nuclear waste repository in basalt (NWRB). This paper reviews the major work required (work elements), issues identified, and plans for issue resolution identified in the SCR.
