Only one producing depth record falls in 1988

Until three years ago, it seemed production depth records were unrelated to the ups and downs in the oil market. From 1974 to 1985 a typical year would see three new producing depth records, with exceptions seen in 1980 (a mammoth year in the oil boom), when only one record fell, and 1976 (an unremarkable year), when records were set in five areas. Beginning in 1985, the average fell to about one new record per year and 1988 was no exception. This paper describes the only new producing depth record, set in Ohio, in a relatively shallow interval.
