Oxidation of sulfur dioxide by oxygen in presence of copper(I) and (II) halides

The kinetics of sulfur dioxide oxidation by oxygen in presence of copper(I, II) halides was studied in a gas-flow apparatus, and it was shown that in presence of chloroiodide complexes of copper(I, II) sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfuric acid. A process mechanism was postulated on the basis of kinetic and potentiometric investigations and the kinetic and thermodynamic constants were calculated.
