Three essays examine the political, economic, and military problems involved in ensuring adequate and stable world energy supplies. One paper provides an overview of supply trends through the year 2000, paying special attention to the relative importance of OPEC oil and Soviet gas imports by industrial and developing states. The second paper explores the prospects for energy availability in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and assesses the implications for the West of alternative energy outcomes in the Soviet bloc. The concluding paper discusses the impact of energy-import dependence on the foreign and defense policies of the Western allies and Japan.
