This discusses a method of producing combustible gas which comprises maintaining in a closed chamber a zone of combustion of ring shape in cross section to provide a hollow axial core. The process then involves withdrawing the gases of combustion through said hollow core, passing gas-forming carbonaceous material in a helical path around said zone, injecting the made gas without substantial mixing with the gases of combustion and withdrawing the made gases from said chamber.
