Depression of the superfluid transition in sup 4 He: Renormalization-group theory

We study superfluid {sup 4}He near {ital T}{sub {lambda}} in a homogeneous metastable state where a finite superfluid velocity {ital v}{sub {ital s}} is present. Neglecting vortices we perform a renormalization-group calculation of the superfluid current {ital J}{sub {ital s}}({ital v}{sub {ital s}}) and determine the critical velocity {ital v}{sub {ital s}{ital c}}({ital T}) at which the superfluid state becomes unstable. We apply this result to the situation where the superfluid velocity is induced by a finite heat current {ital Q}. A critical heat current {ital Q}{sub {ital c}}({ital T}) corresponding to {ital v}{sub {ital s}{ital c}}({ital T}) is found which implies a transition temperature {ital T}{sub {lambda}}({ital Q})={ital T}{sub {lambda}}(1{minus}{ital A}{sub 0}{ital Q}{sup {ital x}}) that is lower than {ital T}{sub {lambda}}. We determine the exact exponent {ital x}=(({ital d}{minus}1){nu}){sup {minus}1}{approx}0.744 in {ital d}=3 dimensions and calculate {ital A}{sub 0} in one-loop order. Our results for {ital A}{sub 0} and {ital x} are compared with recent experimental data on the depression {ital T}{sub {lambda}}{minus}{ital T}{sub {lambda}}({ital Q}) of the superfluid transition temperature.
