Basic and applied research in the Chemistry and Materials Science Department is carried out under the auspices of Weapons-Supporting Research (referred to as Chemistry Research Resource, or CRR)and the departmental Institutional Research and Development program. These activities tend to have longer-term goals than those funded directly by Laboratory programs. The report is divided into three sections describing activities in seven areas, the individual CRR projects, and the departmental IRandD projects. Areas are: high-temperature superconductors; tritium; high explosives; advanced characterization; interfaces, adhesion and bonding; advanced synthesis and processing; plutonium and actinides.
