This quarterly report describes progress in basic and applied research carried out in the Chemistry and Materials Science Department under the auspices of Weapons Supporting Research (referred to as Chemistry Research Resource, or CRR) and the departmental Institutional Research and Development program. These activities tend to have longer-term goals than those funded directly by Laboratory programs. The progress report has been divided into broad categories that reflect research areas of current emphasis in the department: advanced materials, materials characterization and analysis, physical metallurgy, chemical reactions and transport processes, properties of hydrogen isotopes, and advances in instrumentation.
