Bridged cationic arene complexes of group VIII metals
The reaction of (Ru(eta-C/sub 6/H/sub 6/)Cl/sub 2/)/sub 2/ with 1,3-dimesitylpropane (I) in CF/sub 3/COOH followed by treatment with HBF/sub 4/ gives (Ru(eta-I)(eta-C/sub 6/H/sub 6/))(BF/sub 4/)/sub 2/ (II), which can then be reduced under the action of NaBH/sub 4/ in THF to neutral Ru(eta-I)(eta-C/sub 6/H/sub 8/)(III). Next, complex III can be converted under the action of HCl in MeOH into (Ru(eta-I)Cl/sub 2/)/sub 2/ (IV), which gives V after boiling in CF/sub 3/COOH (approx. 40 h) followed by treatment with HBF/sub 4/. The reduction of complex V under the action of NaBH/sub 4/ in THF gives Ru(eta/sup 6/-Me/sub 3/C/sub 6/H/sub 2/ x (CH/sub 2/)/sub 3/C/sub 6/H/sub 4/Me/sub 3/-eta/sup 4/)(VI). The reaction of ..gamma..-mesitylpropyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethylcyclopentadiene (VII-H) with RhCl/sub 3/ x 3H/sub 2/O gives (Rh(eta-VII)Cl/sub 2/)/sub 2/ (VIII), and its reaction with H/sub 2/IrCl/sub 6/ x 6H/sub 2/O gives the complex (Ir(eta-VII)Cl/sub 2/)/sub 2/ (IX). The two complexes have been converted into bridged cationic complexes X and XI, respectively, by boiling them in CF/sub 3/COOH followed by treatment with HBF/sub 4/. Boiling complex VII - H with Co/sub 2/(CO)/sub 8/ produces Co(eta-VII)(CO)/sub 2/ (XII), which gives bridged products XIIIa and XIIIb after boiling in CF/sub 3/COOH and treatment with HX (X = BF/sub 4/, PF/sub 6/). The structures of the compounds obtained have been confirmed with the aid of their PMR spectra and with the aid of their IR and mass spectra in a number of cases.
