It has been shown that CH/sub 3/TiCl/sub 3/ forms two kinetically different complexes with poly-4-vinylpyridine grafted to polyethylene. The quantities of these complexes are 70-80% (I /SUB B/ ) and 20-30% (I /SUB A/ ) of the anchored CH/sub 3/TiCl/sub 3/. The Ti-C bond in the (I /SUB B/ ) complexes is decomposed monomolecularly through two mechanisms: concerted (1) and homolytic (2). Rate constants have been found for the decomposition of (I /SUB B/ ) through each of these paths. It is concluded that only in the case of the concerted path of rupture of the Ti-C bond in the coordination sphere of Ti anchored on the surface of a polymer with a functional cover will there be any retardation of the reactions destroying the complex, leading to stabilization of the active catalytic centers.
