A burner is a device that controls the mixing of air with a combustible fuel to produce a stable flame pattern in a boiler, furnace, heater, incinerator, process unit, flare or thermal oxidizer. A burner may be fired with a conventional fuel (gas, liquid or solid), gaseous or liquid waste, or any combination of combustibles. This report will be limited to burners fired with gas, oil or the combination. The paper discusses various aspects of burner maintenance: hybrid burners for critical applications, how much combustion air is needed, plugged burners, why flames become distorted, countering corrosion, flashback and smoke, and dampening noise.
