Line width-luminosity correlation for starburst galaxies

High-resolution spectroscopy and R-band CCD imagery are used to study the kinematics of galaxies with starburst nuclei. Good correlations are found between nuclear H-alpha emission line width and luminosity of the nucleus, and line width and host galaxy luminosity. The fundamental correlation appears to be with the nucleus, but the slope is shallower than the Tully-Fisher relation. This makes it a potentially more sensitive luminosity indicator. 13 references.
