Comparison of global and nuclear properties of starburst and Seyfert 1 galaxies

A comparison of nuclear and host galaxy properties of starburst and Seyfert 1 galaxies is made. Red CCD imagery is combined with emission line spectroscopy to obtain nuclear and host galaxy R band absolute magnitudes and emission line widths. These are used to search for line width-luminosity correlations, such as the Tully-Fisher relation, and to compare the host galaxies of the two types of galaxies. There is no correlation between nuclear luminosity and host galaxy luminosity for either starbursts or Seyferts. The average Seyfert nucleus is three times as luminous compared to the host galaxy as the average starburst nucleus. Starburst emission line width is well correlated with nuclear and host galaxy luminosity. The fundamental correlation appears to be with the nuclear luminosity, although the slope of host galaxy line width-luminosity has the same slope. No correlation between Seyfert 1 line width and any luminosity parameter is found. However, average Seyfert narrow emission line width is less than the stellar velocity dispersion of comparable galaxies. A comparison of the host galaxy absolute magnitudes show that evolution from a starburst nucleus to a Seyfert nucleus is not possible for all galaxies.
