Upgrading heavy oil to pipeline quality

C-E Lummus has conducted pilot tests on the application of LC-Fining, a heavy oil hydrogenation process, to various heavy crudes and tar sand bitumens. Commercial projections were obtained by calculating an equilibrium catalyst inventory from the catalyst batch used in the pilot studies. Topped Lloydminster crude yielded a product of 24/sup 0/ API gravity and 0.6Vertical Bar3< sulfur at a hydrogen consumption of slightly under 1000 cu ft/bbl; a 50,000 bbl/day plant would require an $83 million investment and $1.78/bbl cost for catalyst and hydrogen. The heavier Jobo (Venezuelan) crude required desalting and demetallizing with an inexpensive contact agent, a process which in a first LC-Fining reactor gave a product not greatly different from raw Lloydminster crude and which could be transported by an unheated pipeline. This process, for a 50,000 bbl/day plant, would require a $74 million equipment investiment and $0.63/bbl catalyst and hydrogen cost. Further processing through two additional LC-Fining reactors gave a product of 21Vertical Bar3< residuum content, 0.7Vertical Bar3< sulfur, and 24/sup 0/ API gravity; for which a 50,000 bbl/day plant would require $106 million equipment investment and $1.92/bbl for catalysts and hydrogen.
