Wastewater treatment for the solvent-refined coal process

Conference · · 86th AIChE Natl. Meet. Prepr.; (United States)

A zero-discharge water management system for a plant producing 50,000 bbl/day of liquid fuel from coal by the SRC-II process and located at the mouth of a coal mine would involve an estimated total installed cost of $37,707,366 and annual costs of $14,075,024 in 1977 dollars. Assuming straight-line depreciation over 20 yr, the system would add $0.87/bbl to product cost and require approx. 3Vertical Bar3< additional capital over the total plant costs. Treatment of the hydrogenation wastes to recover phenols, ammonia, and sulfur would be expected to shorten the payback of investment. Such a plant is expected to consume 9 million gal/day of water, of which 3 million would be consumed for evaporative cooling. Optimum plant design is assumed, and costs for extra pumps and piping needed to recycle streams and for site preparation are generally not included. The systems for treating the raw and cooling water and hydrogenation and total wastewaters are described, including entering and discharge streams and capital and operating costs.
