Unstable vortices in the 2D WZNW model

In this paper, unstable-vortex solutions to equations of motion are studied in the WZNW model. The valley method is used to integrate over negative modes of the vortex. The result is that vortices produce the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. At large values of the level k the theory is conformal, whereas at small k it is driven away form criticality. The corresponding effective Lagrangian is obtained.
