In this paper, orbifold compactifications of ten-dimensional heterotic strings in a two-dimensional and a four-dimensional stage are discussed. A classification of symmetry breaking for a class of two-stage Z[sub 3] [times] Z[sub 3] and Z[sub 2] [times] Z[sub 3] compactification is made. The general structure of such models is considered, and an example spectrum calculated.
