Deep propagation tool applied in San Joaquin Valley

The Deep Propagation service has been field tested at numerous locations around the world and is now offered commercially in California. The sonde radiates 25 MHz electromagnetic phase shift and attentuation of the electromagnetic wave. The measured phase shift and attenuation are used to compute the dielectric constant and resistivity of the formation. The dielectric constant is used to calculate water saturations, which are largely independent of formation water salinity. Unlike the higher frequency Electromagnetic Propagation Tool, with its relatively shallow depth of investigation, the new tool uses a transmitter and four antennas mounted on a mandrel to measure the uninvaded formation. The tool is centered in the borehole, which eliminates most of the effects of rugose boreholes. The present interpretation technique uses a modified Lichnecker equation. A polarization factor, p, is added to the exponent of the water terms of a dual water model to compensate for water salinity and shaliness. Log examples from various wells in the San Joaquin Valley illustrate the technique. The dielectric constant is used to estimate water saturation in the well-site processing. To obtain a more detailed analysis, it is computer processed at field log interpretation centers.
