Better way to give catalysts a facelift
Three new catalyst regeneration plants are evidence of the growing popularity among refiners of offsite catalyst regeneration. These are Catalyst Recovery Inc.'s Rodange, Luxemburg, regeneration plant, which is Europe's first and which is due for startup in Aug. 1979; W. R. Grace and Co.'s Davidson Chemical Division planned 7 million lb/yr plant, which is due for completion in 1981 in Lake Charles, La.; and Catco's planned regeneration plant, the site and completion date for which have not yet been announced. Such plants can restore spent catalyst at a savings of $0.50-$1.00/lb compared with in-situ regeneration and reduce activity loss by means of a more even temperature distribution; the savings are due to elimination of pollution control costs and to elimination of downtime. According to D. Morash, president of Catco, an estimated 10 million lb/yr of catalyst are regenerated world-wide, compared with 500,000 lb/yr five years ago. According to Catalyst Recovery Inc., regeneration costs, which will vary with catalyst type, quantity, and carbon and sulfur loading, will be about $0.45-$0.55/lb for hydrotreating catalyst and $0.70-$0.80/lb for hydrocracking catalyst. The special equipment involved in offsite regeneration is briefly discussed.
