Offsite regeneration of refining catalysts

Conference · · Natl. Pet. Refiners Assoc. Annu. Meet. Pap.; (United States)

The continuous belt regenerator, the most recent development in offsite catalyst regeneration technology, moves catalyst on a belt through a series of separate heating zones and allows a precise, smooth temperature gradient to be maintained along the length of the belt. Each belt uses about 30 thermocouples which are positioned in the catalyst bed at temperature control points. Continuous belt regeneration of nickel molybdate, cobalt molybdate, and hydrocracking catalysts typically allows the recovery of 95-98%, 95-98%, and 90-95%, respectively, of the original catalyst activity, compared with in-situ regeneration, which allows recovery of 75-80%, 80-85%, and 75-80%, respectively, of the original activity. A 20,000 bbl/day naphtha reformer pretreater, which uses 100,000 lb of catalyst, would cost $310,000 for offsite regeneration, including $200,000 for a second catalyst charge, compared with $10,000 for utilities used in in-situ regeneration; the extra expense is justified by the saving of 5 days of down time with in-situ regeneration, which down time would cost $300,000. Other advantages of offsite regeneration, e.g., the elimination of corrosion problems associated with in-situ regeneration, are discussed.
