[National Energy Board]: Annual report 1998
The Board is an independent regulatory tribunal with such responsibilities as granting authorizations for construction and operation of pipelines and electric power lines, setting of tariffs for oil and gas pipelines under its jurisdiction, providing advice to petroleum boards and federal ministries, conducting environmental assessments, and ensuring safe operation of pipelines. This report begins with highlights of Board activities during the year. It then reviews energy production and consumption in Canada, with relevant statistics, as well as energy-related exports and imports; Board activities related to safety and environmental issues; public information services; and corporate activities. Appendices include an outline of the Board`s mandate, lists of legislation and regulations under which the Board operates or has responsibilities, a table of legal proceedings carried out during the year, a list of companies regulated by the Board, and an outline of the Board`s co-operation with other agencies.
