Nuclear power-plant designs are in the process of extraordinary change. Worldwide social, political, industrial, and regulatory institutions are exerting unprecedented pressures to significantly increase the overall safety and availability of power plants while improving their cost competitiveness. In the forefront of this arena of change are major advances occurring within the power-plant control complex. These changes are materializing through a combination of many factors, including the infusion of new computer-based technologies that were not mature enough to incorporate into the previous generation of plants, revision of design philosophies to accommodate the wider concerns and goals in today's licensing climate, and the incorporation of emerging design disciplines, such as Human Factors Engineering, to improve the response of the operator while reducing the potential for human error. Discussed herein is the ABB-Combustion Engineering Advanced Control Complex, which addresses the needs of the evolutionary nuclear power-plant designs that are now under development. The Nuplex 80+[sup TM] Advanced Control Complex was designed for the System 80+[sup TM] Advanced Light-Water Reactor and has also been applied to the U.S Department of Energy's Heavy-Water Reactor Facility, The Nuplex 80+ design features extensive use of remote multiplexing, digital processing technology, color graphic displays with touch access, and fiber-optic data communications to provide an economical, [open quotes]user friendly,[close quotes] and highly reliable control complex for emerging advanced nuclear plant designs.
