A discussion of U.S. needs for imported oil covers the projected increase in Alaskan crude oil production from 1.2 million bbl/day in 1977 to 2 million bbl/day in 1985 as compared with a projected U.S. increase in import requirements from 8 million bbl/day in 1977 to 12 million bbl/day in 1985; the 1976 record of almost 30,000 tanker arrivals in U.S ports; to deliver the needed oil; the need to improve U.S. ports and harbors to accommodate modern tankers of 200,000 dwt and larger; and the economic and environmental benefits to be realized from the use of larger vessels.
