OSTI ID:6986333
Ytterbium(II) and europium(II) boron hydride complexes were prepared via ammonia reduction reactions between ytterbium and europium metal and ammonium salts of B[sub 3]H[sub 8][sup [minus]], B[sub 10]H[sub 10][sup 2[minus]] and B[sub 12]H[sub 12][sup 2[minus]]. Ammoniaborane was also reacted with the lanthanides by this method. Ytterbium and europium complexes were also prepared from metathesis reaction between the lanthanide dichloride and alkali metal salts of B[sub 3]H[sub 8][sup [minus]] and BH[sub 3]CN[sup [minus]]. Precursor complexes were heated between 550[degrees]C and 1000[degrees]C to form the corresponding borides, YbB[sub 2], YbB[sub 4], YbB[sub 6], or EuB[sub 6]. Tantalum and tungsten foil substrates were coated with a dilute solution of ytterbium borohydride and heated to produce thin films of YbB[sub 2]. The thin film samples were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy.
