Ytterbium(II) and europium(II) boron hydride complexes were prepared via ammonia reduction reactions between ytterbium or europium metal and ammonium salts of B{sub 3}H{sub 8}{sup -}, B{sub 10}H{sub 10}{sup 2-}, and B{sub 12}H{sub 12}{sup 2-}. Divalent lanthanide aminoborates were also prepared by this method. Bonding interactions between the boron hydride and metal center were studied by {sup 1}H NMR, {sup 11}B NMR, and infrared spectroscopy. The divalent lanthanide precursor complexes were heated between 550{degrees}C and 1000{degrees}C to form the corresponding borides, YbB{sub 2}, YbB{sub 4}, YbB{sub 6}, and EuB{sub 6}. Tantalum foil substrates were coated with a dilute solution of ytterbium borohydride and heated to produce thin films of YbB{sub 2}. The thin film samples were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy.
