Title: Telecommunications play major role in Iraq-Turkey crude line

Journal Article · · Pipe Line Ind.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6986199

The Iraq-to-Turkey crude oil pipeline features automation and remote control via highly sophisticated telecommunication facilities. Boru Hatlari Ile Petrol Tasima A.S. (BOTAS), a subsidiary of Turkish Petroleum Corp., was organized to build and operate the line in Turkey. A dispatching center at Ceyhan (the terminal in Turkey) and a similar one at Kirkuk (where the line originates) are each capable of automatically operating and controlling all the equipment and instruments at both terminals and also at the pump stations along the system. Under normal conditions, it is possible to control the Iraq section only from Iraq, and the Turkey section only from Turkey; control of tank vessel loading at Ceyhan can be performed only by the Turkey dispatcher. The microwave system, with 22 relay stations and 10 main stations, transmits telephone, Telex, facsimile, and data. In Turkey, the system includes Part A devoted to the main pipeline route, and Part B serving the marine facilities and short range VHF shore-to-ship communication. Details of the pipeline systems, and dispatching operations are presented.
