A method is described for removing liquids, small solids, chips, and the like from well bores during drilling and well cleaning operations. Use is made of certain hydroxy alkyl sulfonates as foaming agents in the gas drilling of wells and in well clean-out operations. The sulfonates may be generally any of the alkali metal salts such as lithium, sodium, potassium, and the like. The alkali metals preferred are sodium and potassium. (4 claims)
