The influence of four conductor vibration recorders on the vibration they measure was assessed on a full-scale outdoor test line. Measurements made with the line wind-excited by aeolian vibration, and excited by a shaker suspended from the conductor, both showed that a large recorder inertia changes the distribution of conductor bending about a suspension clamp. The maximum bending amplitudes measured are significantly affected when differences in span length, tension, damping, or wind exposure result in large differences in maximum antinode vibration amplitudes in adjacent spans. A simplified analytical model for conductor bending in the vicinity of a suspension clamp was developed to interpret the field data. This model was used to predict the range of aeolian vibration frequencies that can be recorded with a reasonably low level of recorder influence on several ACSR conductor sizes using various vibration recorders.
