In Sept. 1964, Cities Service completed the No. 14 Walker C. Hardy for an initial flow after fracturing of 7,828 Mcf from the Newburg, a Silurian sand geologically known as the Williamsport. Earlier efforts to develop the Newburg in the early 1940's by Owens Libby Owens had resulted in very light wells. Since the early drilling, areas with better potential have been discovered, and modern completion techniques have developed very satisfactory open flows, some over 50,000 Mcf. The first Newburg wells drilled by Owens Libby Owens and the more recent discovery well by Cities Service began the development of what is now known as the Kanawha Forest field. Two other areas of Newburg potential now under active development are the Rocky Fork field of Kanawha and Putnam counties, and the Parchment Valley field of Jackson County.
