High success ratios, initial flows promise good times for Newburg

During the past 3-1/2 yr, operators in West Virginia have actively pursued deep drilling to the Newburg sand (Upper Silurian Williamsport sandstone)--one of the newest and most productive pay sands in the Appalachian Basin. Gas from this sand has been found in commercial quantities in Boone, Kanawha, Putnam, Jackson, and Wirt counties. Three Newburg gas fields are currently being developed: Kanawha Forest in Boone and Kanawha counties; Rocky Fork in Kanawha and Putnam counties; and Ripley in Jackson county. The Newburg was established last year as the principal deep target in West Virginia. Drilling statistics for the past year reveal that for the first time the Oriskany sandstone (Lower Devonian) was not the primary objective in deep gas drilling. Forty-seven Newburg wells were drilled in W.-central West Virginia last year. Twenty-six of these produced gas, 7 had gas show, and 14 were dry.
