Oil shale occurs throughout the world, in every continent. The world's largest reserves are in the Green River formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Within this area, the Piceance Basin contains some 120 to 150 billion bbl of oil in shale in 30 gal per ton, or greater, richness. The Colony property which is being considered for the first plant consists of some 4,400 acres located on private land at the head of Parachute Creek, north of Grand Valley, Colorado. The plans call for mining approx. 66,000 tons per day of shale by room and pillar methods, crushing the shale to minus half-inch, retorting the shale to produce hydrocarbon gases and liquids, then partially refining these hydrocarbons and recovering sulfur and ammonia as by-products. The hydrocarbon gases would be used as fuel for the complex, and the principal product would be about 48,000 bpsd of 35 to 40/sup 0/ API synthetic crude. The heart of the complex is the retort facility, which utilizes the Tosco II process.
