The colony shale oil project has been launched in a $2 billion-plus program designed to recover 47,000 bpd of hydrotreated shale oil and liquid petroleum gas from a 6-train retorting system supplied with shale from a 66,000 short tons/day room-and-pillar mine. Located on the Middle Fork of Parachute Creek, 16 miles upstream from Grand Valley on the Colorado River, the project is targeted for initial production late in 1985. The retorting trains will employ the Tosco II system which uses hot ceramic balls for heating shale by direct contact. This system does not degrade the distillate by combustion, since there is no burning of shale nor dilution of vapor streams with combustion products. The development and management of the project are discussed. The handling of rock underground, commercial mining, and retorting are described, and the retorting system is diagrammed.
