An electron-atom crossed beams apparatus has been designed built, and tested. The inelastic electron differential scattering cross section for e/sup 2/S/sub 1/2/ ..-->.. e/sup 2/P/sub 3/2, 1/2/ of sodium was measured in the initial experiment performed with this apparatus. Relative differential scattering cross sections were measured for incident electron energies of: 100, 54.4, 38, 28, 18, 10, 5, and 3 eV. These were put on an absolute scale by integrating over solid angle and normalizing to the total excitation cross sections measured by Enemark and Gallagher. The author's measurements compare favorably to both experiment and theory where other such data are available. Comparison is made to the theoretical calculations of: Walter's; Kennedy et al.; and Moores and Norcross; and the experimental data of Buckman and Teubner; Shuttleworth et al.; Srivastava and Vuskovic; and Teubner et al.
