According to T. H. Petty, chairman of the Pacific Coast Gas Association (PCGA) and of El Paso Natural Gas Co., at a PCGA transmission conference, the outlook for natural gas has been improved by several recent developments, including recent moves by J. R. Schlesinger (Dep. Energy), who has acknowledged a significant gas surplus for 2-5 yr, has urged industry and utilities to switch back to gas use, and has asked the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for cooperation in adopting rules to encourage the use of surplus gas instead of fuel oil. Petty also noted that U.S. gas distribution companies, which were rejecting new residential business in 1976, are now seeking new business; and that gas supply studies consider volumes of 25 trillion cu ft in 1985 and 30 trillion or more by 2000 as attainable possibilities. The gas industry still faces other problems, such as rejection of LNG projects, the uncertain status of Mexican gas imports, and delays in the Alaskan pipeline project.
