Nuclear LP turbine design and operating experience
Alsthom is the only company in the world which has extensive operating experience with large nuclear LP rotors of two radically different designs. The first one, using shrunk-on disks, was developed with emphasis on keeping stresses low. No disk cracking has been encountered in 28 units having logged up to 55,000 operating hours. 15 turbines of the second type featuring welded shafts have been operating for up to 23,000 hours. No cracking problems have been encountered. Compared to built-up rotors, the welded LP shaft offers a larger safety margin against failure, due to its intrinsically lower stress level. For this reason, Alsthom is exclusively using welded shafts for all its second-generation nuclear units rated up to 1500 MW.
