Choice of next ehv level hangs in balance

In November 1962 a little publicized meeting was held in Paris that had vast implications for the future of ehv transmission not only in the U.S., but around the world. This meeting of the Committee on Extra High Voltages, TC-30, of the International Electrotechnical Commission faced the task of deciding whether 700 or 750 kV, or some voltage in between should be the next international standard level above 500 kV. The developments in standardization are reviewed.
