Given a lepton number {ital L}=1 for {ital e}, {nu}{sub {ital e}}, {mu}, and {nu}{sub {mu}}, all available data at present are compatible with {ital L}=0 for {tau} and {nu}{sub {tau}}. A model with such an assignment is shown to be as natural as the conventional one in a supersymmetric extension of the standard model. Processes such as {ital p{bar p}} (or {ital pp}){r arrow}{tau}{sup {plus minus}}{tau}{sup {plus minus}}+ two quark jets as well as {ital ep}{r arrow}{tau}{sup {minus}}{tau}{sup {minus}}+ one quark jet+missing energy ({ital p}{sub {ital T}}) provide unique signatures of this possibility.
