This paper summarizes and highlights the development of the nuclear power program in India starting in the 1950s. Research programs performed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre are discussed encompassing all aspects of the fuel cycle and leading up to the design and construction of the first plant in India-Kalpakkam in 1983. Efforts to exploit India's abundant thorium resources for fast breeder reactor development is discussed.
