India's fast reactor programme is described in detail. A 15 MW(e) Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) under construction in the Reactor Research Centre at Kalpakkam, will provide experience in construction and operation of a sodium cooled fast reactor. Fuel and material testing is an essential aspect of fast reactor development. For this purpose, FBTR will serve as irradiation facility and Radiometallurgical and Radiochemical Laboratories will provide the necessary support. A significant effort in material science is also planned. The Pulsed Fast Reactor planned for construction in the Centre will be a valuable tool for studies in radiation damage and solid state physics. The success of fast breeders is significantly dependent on efficient methods of reprocessing of irradiated fuel. Development work in reprocessing of fast reactor fuels is included in the programme of the Reactor Research Centre. An extensive programme in sodium technology, reactor component development and testing and fast reactor instrumentation is also planned. Establishment of fuel fabrication technology will be undertaken at Trombay in the first instance. The test reactor and the various laboratories will be in operation by 1970--77. The design of a proto- type fast breeder will commence in 1974 to permit construction by the end of the decade. (auth)
