New Polysil insulators are entering the commercial market after a five-year development and field-testing period during which the insulators outperformed porcelain insulators. A resin binder molded with graduated, highly-compacted silica particles makes the Polysil insulation material mechanically strong without the firing required of ceramics. The Polysil material has other applications, such as electrical switches and underground-transmission systems. (DCK)
