Title: Axial and radial coefficients of thermal expansion of carbon fibers in the 20-430 C temperature range as derived from the thermal expansion of 1-D-C-SiO2(B2O3) composites

The axial and radial coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of HS (T300), HM (M40), and UHM (P100) carbon fibers have been computed, within the 20-430 C temperature range, from thermal expansion measurements performed on unidirectional composites with the fibers embedded in an isotropic glass SiO2-15 mol pct B2O3 matrix. The various CTE of the carbon fibers were found to be strongly anisotropic. At room temperature all of them are negative along the fiber axis and positive along a radial direction. Their thermal variations can be described with polynomial relations of the second order. The CTE values have been tentatively correlated with the microstructural features of the fibers. 17 refs.
