Possible cooperative bonding between the Ru-bonded and the S-bonded SO[sub 2] groups in CpRu(PPh[sub 3])(SO[sub 2])(S(SO[sub 2])-4-C[sub 6]H[sub 4]Me)
- McGill Univ., Montreal, Quebec (Canada)
The complexes CpRu(PPh[sub 3])[sub 2]SR, where R = 4-C[sub 6]H[sub 4]Me, 1-C[sub 3]H[sub 7], and CHMe[sub 2], react with SO[sub 2] to give two types of products; one, CpRu(PPh[sub 3])[sub 2](S(SO[sub 2])R), possesses a labile S-bonded SO[sub 2] group, and the other type, CpRu(PPh[sub 3])(SO[sub 2])(S(SO[sub 2])R), possesses both S-bonded and Ru-bonded SO[sub 2] groups neither of which are labile. The structure of CpRu(PPh[sub 3])(SO[sub 2])(S(SO[sub 2])-4-C[sub 6]H[sub 5]Me) was determined. During the initial stages of the reaction, complexes with two SO[sub 2] groups are favored at low SO[sub 2] concentrations, while those with only S-bonded SO[sub 2] are favored at high concentrations. This observation and the differences in the relative ease of SO[sub 2] loss between the two types of complexes is discussed in terms of cooperativity between the two SO[sub 2] groups. This leads to reduced lability of the S-bonded SO[sub 2] group when the complex contains a Ru-bonded SO[sub 2] ligand (or a CO ligand).
