Paraho -new prospect for shale
Sohio Petroleum Co. is organizing a 30-mo. long test of a new, promising process for shale oil recovery owned by Paraho Development Co. of Denver. Other companies are joining in the venture. So far, 10 companies have joined the project, each investing $500,000. Engineering and preliminary paper work should be completed within weeks. Then construction, to take 5 to 6 mo., gets under way to modify a government oil shale test facility at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo., that has not been used in 6 yr. The test of the Paraho process will be inexpensive because the existing government facility will be used, including the mine, without major overhaul. The Paraho kiln will be installed. This kiln is cylindrical and operates in a stationary vertical position. The test unit will be 8-1/2 ft ID. Chunks of kerogen laden shale, up to 3 in. in diam, will pour continuously into the top of the kiln, which is filled with the material. Heating occurs in the lower half and a grate in the bottom agitates slowly to shake out the spent shale. The kerogen vapors are collected and removed as a mist from the kiln and piped to recovery units.
