Catalysts containing 1.8-16Vertical Bar3< copper on ..gamma..-alumina were prepared by minimum solution impregnation and characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance, optical spectroscopy, ESCA, ESR, X-ray absorption edge shifts, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure. At low copper contents, the copper apparently enters the defect spinel of the ..gamma..-alumina support to give a well-dispersed cupric aluminate phase not detected by X-ray diffraction. In this phase most cupric ions are in a tetragonally distorted octahedral environment and approx. 10Vertical Bar3< are in tetrahedral coordination. The proportion shifts with calcination time above 600/sup 0/C towards the bulk spinel cation distribution of 60Vertical Bar3< tetrahedral and 40Vertical Bar3< octahedral. All the alumina samples studied had maximum capacities of approx. 4 wt Vertical Bar3< copper per 100 sq m/g support surface; above this loading a discrete CuO phase was formed. Copper/aluminum catalysts are used as oxidation catalysts and in automobile exhaust emission control.
